About

After studying Physics at Imperial College, I taught maths and physics at a private tutorial college in Kensington before gaining a PGCE Teaching Certificate from the Institute of Education (University of London). I taught physics at Tiffin Boys grammar school in Kingston for four years as well as tutoring physics and maths. I am fully DBS checked (formerly CRB) including the update service. Most recently I helped to set up and taught an A Level Physics course at The Moat School sixth form, a specialist school for SEN students

My approach as a tutor is to engage with the student as a learner. I work with my students to tailor lessons to their strengths and their interests. By engaging with the student's personal interests and strengths as a learner, I strive to make learning a fun and engaging experience. I use a variety of methods and materials, including visual and tactile learning aids, to engage with a variety of learning styles.

I aim to make my lessons as interactive as possible. Students are encouraged to ask questions for both clarification and to satisfy curiosity. Wherever feasible, learning is active with students solving problems for themselves, working under careful supervision to gradually increase independence and confidence in their working.

Continuous informal assessment allows my students and I to identify their strengths and weaknesses: what stumbling blocks and misconceptions they may have to overcome but also how they will best learn to master the material in question and grow as a learner.

One of the biggest barriers to learning for many students is a lack of confidence. By helping students to resolved their difficulties, I aim to bolster their confidence: to allow them to engage with learning as a continuing process of assimilation and improvement, rather than an opaque set of facts and methods to be learned and regurgitated.

I have helped many students to gain top grades at A-Level (AS/A2) (including Further Maths), International Baccalaureate (IB), IGCSE and GCSE, physics and maths, all major boards (Edexcel, OCR, AQA,WJEC) and I have tutored many younger students to pass entrance exams for independent and grammar schools.

My students have gained entrance to top schools including Eton (King's scholarship), Westminster, Winchester, Whitgift, Trinity and King's College School.

I also specialise in scholarship papers and have helped students gain scholarships, including the notoriously challenging King's Scholarship for Eton College and the Westminster Challenge.

In addition, I have prepared numerous students for the 11+ and 13+ Common Entrance papers used by many grammar and independent schools: non-verbal reasoning as well as physics/science and maths. I also have experience working with younger primary school pupils, both in preparation for prep school exams and boosting general maths/reasoning skills. I can also help with preparation for school interviews or university entrance.

My wife's company VLM Tutors can also provide tutors in other subjects at all levels. All our qualified teachers and graduate tutors have relevant tutoring experience and hold current DBS checks. Tutoring sessions can be arranged at our base in Wimbledon SW19 or at your home.
